BEN

The Wave Dancer was swift, and the captain expected them to reach Caledon within a few days. Ben couldn't have been more grateful. At least Lady Sarah had provided a ship that would get the journey done in half the time of most ships available. Since the first day they set out from Misty Shallows, Ben had been seasick, and he supposed many a sailor had gotten a good laugh out of watching him hang over the railing, feeding the fish. A week into the journey, he now thought it would have been much worse had they taken a slower ship. The captain said that if you did get seasick, better to get done with it and move on. The problem was that most men got seasick for a day, and then they got better. Ben was as bad today as he had been every day since they set sail.

"I'll never set foot on a ship again, by the gods," he said. "Never!" Father patted him on the back as he stood beside him.

"You shouldn't invoke the gods, Ben. They can be cruel, and they don't like to be distracted by mere mortals unless it is something important."

Ben snorted.

"The gods... That's something John would say. When did you start caring about the gods, Father?"

Father gave him a sad look, and Ben immediately regretted his harsh words.

"I started caring the day they took three of my children away," Father said quietly and stared off at the horizon.

"I'm sorry. But I don't think it was the gods' doing. Someone did it to hurt us. Someone did it to hurt House Frost."

"I agree," Father said, "and if what Royar told us is true, we are facing a far worse enemy than Skraelings."

"Father, I have been thinking. If Lady Rhiannon is the White Lady, then do you think she is the mastermind behind all this? Or do you think someone else is pulling her strings also?"

Father got a dark look in his eyes.

"No. Lady Rhiannon isn't the mastermind at all. This is Lord Erwin Carlyle's doing. He is the one. I still don't know what he hopes to accomplish, but this is his doing for sure. He is ruthless enough and more cunning than most men. No, that damned Lord Carlyle, he's the one."

"Then, will Lord Ronald back our cause, once he learns of this?"

"No, sadly. I don't think Lord Ronald is in a position to do much at all about his wife's scheming. She rules House Fleetwood now, regardless of her husband's titles.

"Andrew won't like it, though," Ben insisted. "When he learns what his stepmother has done, he will take charge and do the right thing. He's already got his rangers, and he's been ruling in Lord Ronald's stead for a long time" Father nodded.

"True, Andrew is a good man. But we have no way to let him know, and his stepmother has a tight grip on Riverdale. He may never learn the truth of it all. In fact, I believe he's in danger as well, since he is the heir, after all.
